Once a kennel boy at his dad’s veterinary practice in St. Louis, Dr. Jeffrey Dierberg grew up thinking he wanted to be a veterinarian.

“I was interested in medicine. I thought I wanted to be a veterinarian and another kennel boy I was friends with, we went to the University of Missouri … both going to be veterinarians,” Dierberg says. “After the first semester, we both decided to be doctors … we decided we wanted to talk to our patients.”

A Manitowoc woman beat the odds after suffering a near-fatal stroke, thanks to quick actions by onlookers and the neurological surgery team at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay.

Carol Jean’s story: Shoulder replacement ensures independence

After having her left shoulder replaced, Carol Jean Temp knew right away that she needed her right shoulder done.

“I did know that it had to be done, but at the time that I had the left one done, they were both really bad, but I chose the left one because at that time it seemed to be worse,” says Temp, who is in her 80s.

“It was hard to reach into a cupboard. It was hard to backcomb and take care of my hair, put my makeup on … certain parts of my clothing was difficult to get into.”

Basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, can appear in various ways. It tends to develop slowly, and it can be misinterpreted as harmless marks, pimples, or scars, which is what happened to Lori Ravnikar.

“It was a tiny little spot that looked like a little pimple. I didn't even know I had a basal cell,” Ravnikar says. "I mean, it was just a tiny spot, and my sister-in-law had, had a small spot removed. She goes, 'you need to get that checked out.’”
